I also own this thread.;)
So we all know what's going on with the High Def battle currently.
In the Red corner it's HD-DVD and in the Blue corner, we have Blu-Ray. Those are the corresponding colors of their casings, btw. Let's get ready to RUMBLE!
Which Format do you support and think will win?
Edit: Ah crap, I forgot to put in my Vote!:p
I voted for Blu-Ray because it's more advanced than HD-DVD. I know, technology isn't everything and this turn out to be another VHS Vs. Betamax war. Regardless, we are the consumers and ultimately, we will decide which format lives and falls.
P.S. I did not add a Both poll option. I know that there are Dual Platform Players now, but I want to see what your votes are and hands down...who YOU think will be the winner.;)

I've always thought the winner would be HD-DVD, its a more basic technology that just extends what was developed with the DVD format. Currently Toshiba says HD is in the lead but who knows what is going to happen.
It always seems to me that whenever Sony develops a media format they get a wild hair up their ass about how its handled. They want to control the development and production of everything down to the discs which in turn puts pressure on media supporters. Betamax was the more advanced technology Vs. VHS, the equipment and media were both more expensive; even though it produced better results when recording consumers choose VHS over it. Circumstances are different in todays world, people have more money and want the best of the best so Blu-Ray seems to be a viable option.
The kicker here is what studios support which format. Thats what is keeping the war going and will until studios either put their content on both media types or start switching to the winning side.

Neither will win, it will be a stalemate. Sony's Blu-Ray will continue because of the Playstation 3, not to mention there are movie companies owned by sony who produce on blu-Ray. However the other half of the market does not want to pay the licensing fee to sony for Blu-Ray rights, therefore go with HD-DVD. Also the fact that Microsoft will be putting HD-DVD drives in upcoming 360's should bring a little spice to the market. But Personally, get used to it, they'll both be around for a looooooong time.

I think Blu-Ray. Sony does a better job of promoting Blu-Ray, I think, by including in the PS3, while the 360 has no integrated HD-DVD player, so far. Also, the movies that I have seen on Blu-Ray are much better than those on HD-DVD. I don't know if they offer the same movies, they probably do, but when I went to Best Buy, I saw movies for Blu-Ray that I didn't see on HD-DVD. So yeah, that's why I voted Blu-Ray.

HD = HD-DVD
BR = Blu-Ray
Theres only a handful of movies that are available for both formats, i.e. 300.
The majority of movies are branched off either to HD or BR. That's why you see different movies on certain formats only.
For 300, I choose BR over HD. The reason is simple. My PS3 outputs better quality than the HD Drive does on the 360. I run the same setup for both consoles. Monster Component Cables along with Monster Optical Fiber Cables.
A standalone HD Player will beat the add-on player for 360 any day.

Um.....360s do have an HD-DVD Player, its standalone but its there, and they are integrating it

^^^That's not a standalone in my opinion. It's an "Add-On".

I bought the HD-DVD player for the 360, so hopefully that works out for me. If not oh well, I'm prolly gonna get a PS3 after Christmas anyways just for Socom.

Stailmate as well. If there was no more exclusive movies on BR then i would say that HD would win. They are almost forcing people to buy BR. Serioulsy the difference between the two is not much, there is more space on the BR disc but all that space isnt needed. None of the games that are put out on it are taking it up. Its basically unused space, and everyone is paying extra for that space they arent usuing. As of right now there is no need for it and there wont be for a while.

It's going to be close but I think blu-ray will win if they can keep up with the pricing of the HD-DVD players. Because this all rides on the backs of average consumers and most average consumers don't know their cd's from their dvd's and when they look at the price on an hd-dvd player and the one on the blu-ray all they care about is which one is cheaper. Because all the specs and info on these formats are so convoluted and close that price is the only real diffrence in their eyes.

Might sound stupid reason. But I hope HD DVD wins because I've read that the distance between surface and media is thicker on HD DVD's . I like to keep things for a long time and knowing I can buff my HD DVD disc more times is a good thing.

Two things...
1st and formost you shouldn't have to worry about that anyway because you should be gental and carful with the discs
2nd the issues with blu ray discs and "extreme fragile-ness" was resolved before it even hit the market. There was a time when the discs were going to reside inside of plastic cases and you would just stick this case into the blu ray capable device. But that is no longer the case.

The data does still lie closer to the surface...making it even more susceptible to scratches that cause issues.

I've always gone with HD-DVD because initially Bluray was using multiple compression methods, including MPEG-2 and the initial releases generally looked worse than HD-DVD which uses VC1 standard which is a great compression algorithim and would make up for the capacity difference between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Now that, for the most part, they've stepped up the effort on cleaning the video of any blemishes and doing more prestine transfers for Blu-Ray, as well as using VC1 and h.264 mostly, the quality differences between the two are more or less null, so I now I support the one that is the cheapest to produce and drops in price the fastest, which is still looking like HD-DVD. Either way, I'm not supporting one or the other until there is one singular format.

HD DVD is pretty awesome, no region coding and some very good exclusives like Transformers, Serenity, Heroes, Hot Fuzz and Children of Men.
Shame that Blu-Ray has Fox, because I'm a big Die Hard fan.

Honestly it's all going to come down to the lack of intelligence in most consumers. Consumers are going to go with HD-DVD because the name is familiar. A name like Blu-Ray confuses a lot of people (I've witnessed this at work) and makes them think they are going to have to learn a new technology all over again. Plus, it doesn't help that the current blu-ray players take forever to read a disc and show something other than a loading screen. Granted blu-ray may have more space on the disc but most studios are never going to use it. You look at the fact that an HD-DVD can still hold the data required for a 1080P picture which means all that extra space is going to be used for special features on a blu-ray. And most consumers don't care about special features and most movies don't have that much stuff to include.

Correct me if I'm wrong , but didn't HD DVD make a equal sized disc from making it trilayered.?

They have made a triple layer disc that holds 1 gig more than the blu-ray, but no one has yet to release a movie on that disc and no one has shown interest in doing so.

I got a HD Player just incase I ever need it. I don't have that many movies on it, nor do I plan on purchasing alot of them. Certain titles will get it. I plan on purchasing another HD tv for my bedroom and a stand alone HD player for my bedroom. But until then I'll do most of my purchasing on regular DVD

There is some porn studios making movies on blu-ray now. That makes a huge diffrence. It's going to be a heated battle but there can only be one.

To quote Joe: "Get pwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnd"
Warner Bros. Pledges Exclusive Support to Blu-ray
In a move that could have serious implications for the movie format war, Warner Bros. has suddenly thrown its exclusive support behind Sony's Blu-ray format - making the PS3 even more appealing to hi-def movie watchers.
The next-generation movie format war may have just taken one step closer to being over, as the Blu-ray camp has secured the exclusive support from major studio Warner Bros. Entertainment. Warner up until this point had effectively been neutral, offering its movies in both HD DVD and Blu-ray. Now, "in response to consumer demand" the studio will begin releasing its HD library later this year in Blu-ray only.
Owners of HD DVD players will still be able to pick up HD DVD titles from Warner through this May. Warner Home Video said that "after a short window following their standard DVD and Blu-ray releases, all new titles will continue to be released in HD DVD until the end of May 2008."
"Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want," said Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. "The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."
"Warner Bros. has produced in both high-definition formats in an effort to provide consumer choice, foster mainstream adoption and drive down hardware prices," noted Jeff Bewkes, President and Chief Executive Officer, Time Warner Inc., the parent company of Warner Bros. Entertainment. "Today's decision by Warner Bros. to distribute in a single format comes at the right time and is the best decision both for consumers and Time Warner."
Added Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group: "A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry. Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."
This comes as a pretty big blow to the HD DVD camp, as movies from Disney/Pixar, Warner Bros., Fox, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate are now all Blu-ray exclusive. HD DVD is supported by Paramount/Dreamworks and Universal. For gamers interested in high-definition movies, however, Sony's PlayStation 3 just got another feather in its cap.
Like it or not, this is pretty much the final nail in the coffin for HD-DVD. The only exclusive supporter they have left was bought off and the majority of studios in general are now supporting Blu-Ray exclusively. Pity too, those Blu-Ray cases are an eyesore. I can't imagine having a whole shelf of aqua blue cases....
