It's my understanding it's a refurb.

I'm pretty sure that they send you a refurbished one.
When I sent my box in from the DVD drive crashing I recieved a refurbished one, I could tell it had been opened... I believe they repair yours, but in order to cut down on wait time for the customer, they send you an already repaired one as soon as they receive your old one... but that was a few years ago, and like I said, it wasn't for the RROD ;)

Basically once they get your XBox they make sure there was no foul play that they can void your warranty for then they send you a refurbed one.

RROD warranty = 3 years... everything else = 1.
But in most cases your tray's mechanism is just out of alignment... usually. If that's the case it's an easy fix, you:
1) open your tray.
2) UNPLUG your box (must unplug, not just turn off that way the tray stays out)
3) pull GENTLY on the tray until it reaches the end of the tracks... don't yank, just pull it out to the end.
4) power it back up and close it.
This works about 90% of the time ;)
