Go over there and post the results please. I'm thinking either a lack of bandwith or some kind of limitation on the amount of connections your router can handle.

Well the connections are usually variable which means there will be some fluctuation (which means you aren't going to be getting your full MB's all the time) but as long as you're within around 1 mb of your connection's max you shouldn't have a problem... if you run it during peak hours and it's below 1.5 then that will definitely be the cause of your lag...
The problem is I pay for 5 meg... and during peak hours I get around .5 megs... my internet provider is trying to fix it, but if they don't then I've gotta find someone else... it SUX. But as long as you're steady over 1 meg your connection should behave fine for live... it's when you start dipping below that you'll notice it ;)
Your real problem is your upload... you want to have about 500 for online gaming in my experience... that's probably where most of your lag comes from ;)
That's work dude...my home when is about half the speed I think...maybe a bit more...
lol, you should play at work ;) you'd always be host.
This is what i get normally when im not being capped.

Is this peak hours for you, flea? If so then you shouldn't have much to worry about... if it goes below that then you might start having issues... but you're overseas; correct? That might cause you a little trouble. However, you're not getting much off your upload which is good ;)

That depends, DSL should not go down at all during peak hours, for cable it's natural for it to do so because you're sharing bandwith with everyone on your node.

lol, except my DSL shares with everybody on my node ;) The type of wire doesn't stop it from dropping... actually in the states Cable is usually a lot more reliable than DSL ;)

Yup dead i am complaining,
its not supposed to drop until ive downloaded 3 gigs worth of stuff in peak time.
It doesnt go any lower than that volume,
thats as low as it goes,
i guess 4-5 meg is still pretty good since im the only one using it,
plus the uploads the most important thing on live if what i was told is correct.
:)
I just hate getting capped when ive not used the thing.

Even half a meg should be able to sustain you if it's just the two of us in a game, but even then you go to red. You must drop packets and have delays as well when that's happening.
1000/300 or so should be plenty to play live, upload is only important when you're host.

I did try .5mb
heck i tried 56k back in the day,
and there seemed to be less lag playing games then than you sometimes get nowdays,
this is supposed to be the future i want my stupidly fast broadband all the time,
with no problems in any games.

lol, .5 meg is where it's steady at... that doesn't mean it's not dropping below there... during the test it'll drop to 150 kb or even lower... then it'll pick back up... then it'll drop back down... etc.
Upload is important off host as well if it gets much lower than 300 ;) Trust me.

Azeron, get on COD4 ;)
And your router may interfere with it... I usually plug directly into my modem to avoid such complications ;)

This is on my laptop, my Dad just upgraded our broadband to 4MB I think, when he did the speedtest on his he has like 3900 or something download, can't quite remember upload, but my download hasn't improved but my upload has nearly doubled.
I was wondering how my 360 is affected? My 360 is also wireless, will its speed be more like my laptops, or will it have improved like my Dads has?
Also, what the hell is ping?
v0lum3
01-05-2008, 04:31 PM
Well download can be impaired by your hardware (if I understand it correctly) so your laptop may not be capable of downloading at fairly high speeds... but don't worry, your 30 can :D
Ping is how long it takes a signal to pass from you to the other site's computer or server or whatever and then back again... basically it's how long it takes your info to be recieved and responded to... ping = how long it takes for your character to fire his weapon in Halo on the host's box ;) lol.
Your xbox will be capable of transferring info super fast and should behave like your fathers... I'm going to assume that your laptop has some kind of large malfunction which impairs it from performing at higher speeds :(

Ah kk, is their anyway I would be able to easily find out what the problem might be? I mean, I'm sitting a few feet away from the router and have been when I was doing the tests.

Close, but ping isn't a time. Ping is a tool. Packet Inter Network Groper.
Basically it sends out ICMP echo requests and when the host you are pinging responds with an ICMP echo response, ping calculates the roundtrip time and any packet loss.
So when you see the ping bars or whatnot on a game it's telling you a few things. First, it can go down with packet loss, which is basically a echo request has been sent...but a response was never received. It can also go down when the roundtrip is taking too long. If it's taking a long time, then communication with the host computer your pinging is unreliable and lengthy.
Here is an example of a Windows ping to a remote host:
C:\Users\Jeremy>ping 4.2.2.2
Pinging 4.2.2.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=56
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=56
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=56
Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=56
Ping statistics for 4.2.2.2:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 19ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 19ms
As you can see, it takes around 19ms average to ping one of the root servers from my home network. I've also not lost any packets so my connection is fairly reliable.

So what's the deal with XBL sucking at the moment? I'll assume that XBL having issues would cause issues. It may not be the connection itself? I've had orange bars on Call of Duty a lot lately?

If you are getting 4900 you are close to mine, here is what it should be: notice the difference in ping also.

Maybe this is why im having no trouble with live at all.
