Incident Description: Today in class [redacted] had a program launched called Foxfire.exe. I had told [redacted] to close the program and resume work but he told me it was a just different browser and that he was doing his work. I had given him two warnings but he just insisted that it was a "better" browser and that he wasn't doing anything wrong. I had then issued his detention.

You should see some of the problems idiots with Firefox cause here.
Both browsers are targets these days. Which is sad as I love my Firefox.

Rules are rules and you have to follow them. We'll probably hear about the parents suing the school over this or some crap in the next few days but whats the basis. Their kid argued with a teacher who is supposed to be the authoritative figure in that classroom, if you go and tell the teacher he's in the wrong you're under-minding his power and kids will run the schools. It's simple, do as your told and STFU. Once you own your own home then you can run Firefox all you want, completely stupid on the students behalf.

yea i mean it obviously wasnt a big deal BUT in a school setting you are asked to do alot of things that are in a word pointless and just serve to show the teacher/administrators authority, so sometimes you just gotta suck it up and realize it doesnt matter

If it helps you accomplish your work more efficiently, then why not?! Our school won't even let us search in my documents, which I have to do at home to "show" I can to the examiner (screenshot FTL).
If it were me, I wouldn't go, get put in isolation and say I did nothing wrong.

Because rules are rules man. I took over the IT dept of an insurance agency and completely locked the computers down from anything being downloaded, blocked websites and all that. I thought I was going to be lynched by everyone until I stood my ground and demanded a legitiment reason why I should allow them to go outside of the rules established by the owners.
Its simple, rules are rules; yeah they suck but if you break them then you should be punished. What do you think would happen if you were working for a company who said "You can't download anything to the computer period." and you go and download something because you feel its a stupid rule? You ass is going to get fired for not being able to follow the rules. If this kid was so adamant about using Firefox he should take the debate to the instructor, talked it over or go over that person's head if need be.

Definitely not worth a detention for using a different web browser.

It isn't worth a detention IMO, but the kid should have listened.
