Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings."

Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.

Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after "Rings," despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion — an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting "The Hobbit" 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.

"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."

Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.

New Line Cinema is owned by Time Warner. Sony and Comcast are among the owners of MGM.

lol, agreed... I'll probably just wait for both to come out... can't understand why I'd need to watch them separately

Don't you know. The movie is just going to be the text scrolling on the screen for people to read. Hollywood got sic and tired of people hating movies for being diffrent from the books. So now thay can't complain because the movie IS the book.

Two two hour movies. So the book is just split in half and scrolled across the screen. They are also considering a six hour version where the text scrolls slower and spans three movies...you know for the retards who have a hard time reading.

Why not? The animated special was like an hour long, and it ommited LOTS of scenes from the book.
Two Hobbit movies does sound a little absurd though...possibly, they will do some more tie-in stuff with when Bilbo finds the ring, so it sets up the 1st LOTR movie. IDK...

The Hobbit definitely deserves at least one movie though. :p

Hmm, interesting, the Hobbit has crappy pacing, so they'll probably change it up a lot for the movie.

Just another case of Hollywood not being able to come up with something original.

What are they going to remake next?

...I think a Top Gun remake would be awesome. Or a sequal showing when Maverick teaches at Top Gun or something.
