In Jamestown, Colorado, two teens have been charged with killing a 7-year-old girl by beating her with imitations of moves from the Mortal Kombat video games, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Lamar Roberts, 17, and Heather Trujillo, 16, were charged as adults on one count each of felony child abuse causing death, according to court documents obtained be the Associated Press.
A police affidavit states that the teens were babysitting Trujillo's half-sister, Zoe Garcia, on December 6. When the teens hit, kicked, and body-slammed her with moves imitating Mortal Kombat, the girl lost consciousness and stopped breathing.
The teens tried to revive the girl by running water in her mouth and attempting CPR. They then called her mother and 911, but the girl died at the hospital.
An autopsy revealed that the girl had a broken wrist, more than 20 bruises, swelling of the brain, and bleeding in her neck muscles and under her spine.
A witness reportedly told police that Roberts said that the girl told them to stop wrestling. When the witness asked why they didn’t stop, he responded, “I don’t know; I was drunk.”
The teens are being held at the Weld County Jail and, if convicted, could be sentenced to 48 years in prison.

They deserve to be tried as adults... at 16 those kids are behind the wheel of cars... there's no excuse that they wouldn't have known what they were doing. Beating up a little girl is inexcusable... they deserve to be tried as adults... and next time the parent should pick a better baby sitter :(

Reading this made me sick. They deserve every bit of their punishment...and the parents should get something too.

The story is sad, and I feel no sympathy for any of the participants and hope they get the harshest of punishments.
On the part of it being 'Mortal Kombat' style moves. I call bullshit. Punching and Kicking and a bodyslam. Yeah, all those 'moves' are reminiscant of many of movies, games, TV shows, and normal adolscent 'fighting'. To come outright and state it was all based off of one video game and try to place the blame on that is retarded. Our society is always looking for someone or something to blame, rather than blame the actual participants or their upbringing. I always hear some of the more 'mature' members of our society say that "our Country has gone downhill ever since spanking became abuse". I tend to agree with that statement. The younger generations are more and more outlandish and have the 'I can do whatever I want attitude' without repricussion or consequence.

Agreed. There's a difference between spanking and beating... A lot of parents just avoid both these days... I'd love to see a parent actually be charged for spanking their child on the rear end... it'll never happen.
True story: My little sister came home one day from school acting like a brat... my mother told her to cut it out or she'd get spanked... my little sister looked my mother in the eye and said "if you EVER spank me again, I'll call the cops" my mom handed her the phone and busted her ass reeeeal good ;) When the cops answered my sister said my mom spanked her... the operator asked if my mother had hit her and she said no, she just spanked my butt... an officer came over (we were notorious in our neighborhood, we owned a strip club) and when my little sister explained what happened he laughed and left... She never pulled that crap again :D

LOL ... The cops didn't even come over when my cousin tried this. The cop on the phone laughed at her and then called my Aunt and Uncle after they hung up. My Uncle was so mad he busted her rear again ... LOL
This is just more bullshit to be blamed on games that has nothing to do with them,
the 2 kids are cowards and deserve everything they have coming to them,
the fact that they were told to stop by the girl and carried on is bad enough,
but this is just a waste of a girls life because of 2 pricks that thought they would be big and clever.
Another question that should be asked is where they got the alcohol from.

It didn't say they were drunk... the WITNESS was drunk.

My guess for the alcohol is that the parents had it lying around the house. IF that's the case, and I were the lawyer of the kids being held, my defense is that the parents are at fault for leaving alcohol accessible to kids, which when drank by the kids, caused them to lose control of their actions. I can see it now....
I am still kind of confused as to how they can be tried as adults. I thought anything under 18 was a juvenille and there was no way that minors could be tried as adults. hmmm...It's sad none-the-less but blaming it on video games is just scapegoating for what the real problem is. Shit, watch jerry springer. Punching and Kicking could be caused by seeing that show...
EDIT: oooooh, the witness was drunk. scratch my first comment...

Yeah, I was about to say that.
I'm sorry, but anyone with a decent upbringing would know not to do that to anyone, never mind a young child. That doesn't mean the 2 lads should get off the hook blaming their parents, as your parents aren't all that you learn from.
This is why I encourage parents to put their child into a nursery etc from as early age as possible. Not that their incompitant, but being around other children etc from a young age teaches children how to act around others, in society.
Anyway, ramble ramble.. There's obviously a problem with them both.

You sure? It could be a typo, but the article says, "When the witness asked why they didn’t stop" not 'when the witness was asked.' *shrugs*

IANAL, but there are some cases, usually involving murder, where a minor can be tried as an adult. It all depends on the circumstances surrounding the event. In this case, yes, by all means, try them as adults. I remember a case 8 years ago where a 12 year old boy from Florida was tried as an adult after killing a 6 year old girl while wrestling with her. (Wow, I found the link (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/01/26/national/26WRES.html?ex=1198299600&en=9ff1bb820fa7282c&ei=5070))

Ah... bad journalism... too convoluted... deciphered meaning:
A witness reportedly told police that Roberts said that the girl told them to stop wrestling. When the witness asked why they didn’t stop, he responded, “I don’t know; I was drunk.”
That means (and it's convoluted) that a WITNESS told the POLICE that ROBERTS (the 17 year old boy charged in the murder) had told the WITNESS That the GIRL had told them (Roberts and the other teen, Heather) to stop wrestling.
The WITNESS then asked ROBERTS why they did not stop (when the girl told them to) and ROBERTS replied "I don't know; I was drunk"
My bad, I misunderstood the post...
Even more so they deserve life IMO.

It often times depends on the crime, how the prosecution wants to try the case, and the mentality of the person committing the crime. In most cases if they're 14 and younger there's little chance of them being tried as an adult, but it can happen as lnx pointed out. Between the ages of 14 - 16 its hit or miss usually depending on the crime, its severity, and circumstances as to if they will be tried as a minor or adult. Often when a person is 16 and up they can be tried as an adult, it mainly depends on how the prosecution feels they will do in such a matter. Its figured that minors 16 to 18 years old should know right from wrong and therefore can often be tried as adults.

CVG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=178056)'s story which explains a little more as to why its linked to Mortal Kombat.
Two teenagers have been arrested after killing a seven-year-old girl by immitating moves from the Mortal Kombat games say prosecutors.
We've all shouted "GET OVER HERE" and pretended to uppercut a mate in the face in our yoof, but Heather Trujillo, 16, and Lamar Roberts, 17, went way further under the influence when they "hit, kicked and body-slammed" Trujillo's half sister, Zoe Garcia, until she lost consciousness.
The two teens were supposed to be babysitting little Garcia, on December 6, when they seized the opportunity to drink alcohol and immitate Mortal Kombat moves on the child.
Trujillo, according to released documents, admitted she'd "punched her in the stomach, karate chopped her lower arms, punched and pinched the victim's thighs, kicked her in the shins, slapped her stomach and buttocks and poked at the victim's chest."
Witnesses say Roberts performed a back kick on Garcia, from which she did not get up. He then cracked an egg in her mouth, apparently to check if she was faking unconsciousness.
When Garcia regained consciousness Trujillo sent her to bed, according to the documents, but she stopped breathing 15 minutes later.
They reportedly tried to revive Garcia, but she later died in hospital. The autopsy showed she had suffered a broken wrist, bleeding in the neck, swelling of the brain and more than 20 bruises.
Roberts claimed he was downstairs playing videogames while Trujillo wrestled with Garcia upstairs. A witness said later, however, that Roberts told her he'd kicked Garcia.
The two teens of Jamestown, Colorado, who said they didn't stop the attack because they were drunk, are being held on trial for child abuse causing death, and face up to 48 years imprisonment.

Funny. Oustide the journalistic comment about Mortal Kombat, the only other mention of any vide games is the "rober was downsatirs playing video agmes" deal. Wow. he said karate chopped too. Are they going to blame the japanese next for it? Whatever, I'm used to the bogus video games kill label.
Anyway, kids like that probably didn't do something of that nature only once. Intixicated or not (i'm still unsure about the alcohol deal) violence liek that breeds through time. Normal consenting people don't have sudden urges liek that...they probably started abusing animals or other kids first. (or possibly they were abused)
Regardless of upbringing, those kids did something horrid, and they should be tried as adults.

I have to disagree. I have two children and have never had a need to spank them. If you raise them right from the beginning...you don't have that problem.
All I have to do is start raising my voice and they start crying.
I think spanking is a cop out. If you would have raised your children right in the first place, there wouldn't be a need to spank them.
Agreed. There's a difference between spanking and beating... A lot of parents just avoid both these days... I'd love to see a parent actually be charged for spanking their child on the rear end... it'll never happen.
I beg to differ. I've seen it. My best friends mom went to jail for half a week for spanking him. I was there when it happened....and it wasn't even that bad.
My over zealous grandmother used to call children's services on my mother every chance she got. I can't tell you how many times my mother almost lost custody over stupid little things.

Thats ridiculous why the hell would you try any sort of fighting moves on a 7-year-old they are way too fragile for that...noobs probably didn't even pull off the moves right.

This is just another reason why society is as bad as it is today. Why would you be using full contact moves on a 7 year old child? I mean if it wasn't their intent to hurt her why were they doing it? And why the fuck would it be Mortal Kombat? Since when did they start doing body slams on Mortal Kombat. At first when I read this and it said that I thought it was gonna be like "girl has heart ripped from body" "girl has torso removed from spine" this don't sound anything like fucking mortal kombat at all.

WOW! I haven't heard this yet. I am shocked. I don't think I have ever went around playing video games before. Well there was this one time that I jumped on a turtle and then tried to get a coin out of a brick wall but it didn't work very well and I had a headache so I stopped.
That's just sad that this happened. Having two children of my own makes this even worse. I cannot even begin to imagine what I would do if one of them died from something as stupid as this. May she rest in peace.
