Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated after an election rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The attacker shot Bhutto twice and then detonated himself killing an additional 15-20 attendees. Additional Info...
Benazir Bhutto is the daughter of President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who was overthrown in a military coup in 1979 and hanged in the same city his daughter was assassinated in this morning. Ms Bhutto was the first woman president to ever be elected in any Muslim state. To make it even more impressive, she was elected President twice before and has always been immensely popular. Twice has she been elected and twice has she been deposed going into self-imposed exile. She most recently returned to Pakistan to run against President Musharraf in the upcoming elections.
She was considered a heretic by her hard line Islamic rivals.
She was pro democracy and pro womens rights.
The above was what I gleaned from the news articles I've read today along with a little bit from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benazir_Bhutto).
Parade Magazine had an expose on Ms Bhutto (http://www.parade.com/benazir_bhutto_interview.html) which was scheduled for print in the January 6, 2008 edition.
