What is the world coming to?

GARLAND, Texas (AP) -- An essay that won a 6-year-old girl four tickets to a Hannah Montana concert began with the powerful line: "My daddy died this year in Iraq."

A fake essay won a 6-year-old girl four tickets to a sold-out Hannah Montana concert.

While gripping, it wasn't true -- and now the girl may lose her tickets after her mom acknowledged to contest organizers it was all a lie.

The sponsor of the contest was Club Libby Lu, a Chicago-based store that sells clothes, accessories and games intended for young girls.

The saga began Friday with company officials surprising the girl at a Club Libby Lu at a mall in suburban Garland, northeast of Dallas. The girl won a makeover that included a blonde Hannah Montana wig, as well as the grand prize: airfare for four to Albany, New York, and four tickets to the sold-out Hannah Montana concert on January 9.

The mother had told company officials that the girl's father died April 17 in a roadside bombing in Iraq, company spokeswoman Robyn Caulfield said.

"We did the essay and that's what we did to win," Priscilla Ceballos, the mother, said in an interview with Dallas TV station KDFW. "We did whatever we could do to win."

She had identified the soldier as Sgt. Jonathon Menjivar, but the Department of Defense has no record of anyone with that name dying in Iraq. Caulfield said the mother has admitted to the deception. Watch a reporter confront the mother »

"We regret that the original intent of the contest, which was to make a little girl's holiday extra special, has not been realized in the way we anticipated," said Mary Drolet, the CEO of Club Libby Lu.

Drolet said the company is reviewing the matter, and is considering taking away the girl's tickets.

This is revolting. I cannot believe what some stupid, desperate people will do for piddly concert tickets. Shameful. You should never say someone is dead unless they really are. That's messing with karma, and karma's a bitch. I hate to say it, but they'll see some sort of punishment from this. They will lose the tickets. They will lose respect in the community. And only fate knows what else will happen to them. So pitiful.

I find it quite childish for the mother to do something like that with her daughter. Not a very good lesson is being shown to her daughter.

It's also quite insulting for her to use something so sensitive, part of many people's lives as a trick card in a way, she has dwelled on other people's terrible experiences and used them to get person gain for her and her daughter.

Hannah Montana is a hoebag :p I hate that people like her so much she's not even that good. But regardless you shouldn't have to lie about death for your personal gain. Thats just plain wrong.

I'm upset that the mother lied about it... I would have just admitted that it was made up. I don't think that it's a good message to send to children, but if it was all fiction then it should have been treated like that all along and nobody would be up in arms but creating false people who supposedly died in order to win is very underhanded... I'd like to see the tickets handed down to a runner up instead.

Keep it in perspective.. People who cheat at video games and gamerscore get nothing. Atleast this chic got a trip to NY and tickets. It doesnt suprise me really.

Probably not. It's more than likely that the tickets will be taken away. All these two are left with is a bad reputation and being known as liars and cheaters.

Yea they never say anything about the actual father. Is he really in IRAQ ? Is he even alive? I'd hate to be in IRAQ defending others and have this joke thrown at me everyday when it might be my last. Wander what that number they showed on the paper (139) is that the days death? I think they should have to forfit the tickets and airfare .

I don't mind personally, if the girl managed to write such a good essay that she managed to convince the jury with it than by all means give her the tickets.

I'm sure this girl and her mother are gonna be more hated in Chicago than Steve Bartman.

I would agree, except they shouldn't have portrayed it as fact, it would have been just as good of a story if they had just admitted it was fiction the whole time... there's no reason to have been lying about this.

I read about this and found it was quite sad that she would even write something like that. It really is messed up that she would even consider it (or the mother for that matter) given the state of affairs over there where death is an all too real possibility.

Wow thats just bad to think of a lie like that. I would never say my dad died just so i could go to a concert. Pathetic if you ask me.
