Warner Bros. Entertainment has announced that is has sided exclusively with Blu-Ray as its high-definition video format of choice beginning later this year, as it phases out HD DVD production by May of 2008.

The announcement was jointly made by Warner Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer and Warner Bros. Entertainment president Kevin Tsujihara. In a statement, Warner confirmed that it would continue to release titles in both Blu-Ray and standard DVD for the foreseeable future.

Meyer categorized the decision as one "focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want."

"The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger," he said. "We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers."

In June of last year, the company delayed its initiative to produce discs containing both formats until 2008, saying in part the decision was meant to give retailers more of an opportunity to designate new sections for the double-format.

Video rental giant Blockbuster also sided exclusively with Blu-Ray last year, saying the format was chosen more than 70 percent of the time in trial stores that offered both. HD DVD discs will still be available via its online rental service.

Paramount and Dreamworks remain two of the largest studios to side with HD DVD, with DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg saying, "We believe the combination of this year's low-priced HD DVD players and the commitment to release a significant number of hit titles in the fall makes HD DVD the best way to view movies at home."

Said Warner's Tsujihara, "A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry."

He concluded, "Consumers have clearly chosen Blu-ray, and we believe that recognizing this preference is the right step in making this great home entertainment experience accessible to the widest possible audience. Warner Bros. has worked very closely with the Toshiba Corporation in promoting high definition media and we have enormous respect for their efforts. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future."

Actually, believe it or not, it's because of the PS3. There is more PS3s in peoples homes then there is HD DVD players so more people are buying blu-ray movies.

It has nothing to do with price or quality. And with more and more companies going blu-ray it's the most logical choice. And the only reason Dreamworks and Paramount are HD-DVD only right now is because of a big fat pay check. Putting Blu-Ray in the PS3 was a dick move by Sony but it sure is working.

How is Blu-Ray in the PS3 a 'dick' move? I find that especially hilarious when just recently people were creaming themselves over a 360 with built in HD-DVD. Double standard much? Blu-Ray was stupid in the short term to put into the PS3 because it made the thing hugely expensive and it basically gave MS carte blanche to outsell the PS3 by exponential numbers thus far in the US and Europe. It definitely hurt the PS3 brand, but at the same time Sony gained what might even be better for them in the long run than the best/2nd best selling console; they are going to be able to licsense Blu-Ray to the tune of billions probably over the next 5+ years.

At the same time, I think we can officially label the 360 'Ultimate' rumor as completely bogus. Even if Microsoft was planning to announce it tomorrow, there is no way they are going to now. They'd eat the loss on the R&D for it and just take it on the chin rather than release an 360 with HD-DVD built in now. I think this is all hilarious as people should have known better than to get their technology news leaks from fucking Stuff Magazine in the first place.

I doubt it, but MS did previously say that a Blu-Ray add-on would not be out of the question should Blu-Ray become the dominate format.

Ugh, I'm a big fan of HD DVD but this looks like the final nail in it's coffin.

I may need to pick up a PS3 now.

I know I read something contrary to that somewhere before:

Peter Moore has stated that if HD DVD loses the format war, Microsoft may also release an external Blu-ray drive.[16] This was later denied by Microsoft.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying but I really don't care enough to try and explain it. Haha. Just know that I meant no disrespect to Sony. I have a PS3. I got it the day it came out and paid 600 bucks for it.

Well of course they're going to deny it, anything else would show a lack of faith in their product and look bad to the consumer. That doesn't mean they couldn't do it if the market changes though.

I was just stating that they had responded/denied the same comment he was quoting.

Ahahahahaha (http://kotaku.com/342485/microsoft-will-consider-going-blu+ray-if-consumers-demand). That certainly didn't take them long.

Responding to news that Warner Bros. opted to put its eggs in the basket of Blu-ray exclusively (http://kotaku.com/340842/warner-bros-goes-blu+ray-only-format-war-lingers-on) last week, Microsoft execs told Reuters that the company would consider a Blu-ray player add-on for the Xbox 360, should consumers show interest in such a product.
