View Full Version : Join the Official Console Heroes Folding@Home Team
Clipse
01-13-2008, 09:38 PM
I would like to formally invite all of our members to join the official Console Heroes Folding@Home group.
Our team number is 103964.
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project designed to perform computationally intensive simulations of protein folding and other molecular dynamics. The goal of the project is "to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases." These enable the scientific community to better understand the development of many diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson's disease, and many others.
We all talk about being heroes and there are many ways of doing that, but this is one way of being a hero and you don't even have to do anything. I invite anyone and everyone to download the Folding@Home software from the Folding@Home website (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download). This can be fun from Windows, Linux, Mac, and even the PS3. Once you've downloaded the Folding@Home software you can enter a specific name and the Console Heroes Team number; you'll then be contributing to the sites team. Open the program and let it go, there isn't anything specific you need to do except let it run and shut it down properly.
For PS3 owners any new PS3 should have the Folding@Home program loaded on the machine, after a quick update you'll then be able to run the program. Once running you can press the Triangle button to pull up the menu, go to "Identify" and then select "Join an Exiting Team"; then enter the team number. You can also use this menu to view your statistics, team statistics, and to stop the program properly.
This is going towards a great cause, one that could very well help save someone you know later on in life. As I mentioned its so very simple to just start the program and let it do its thing. It does take several hours for a job to be complete so I just leave my PS3 on when I go to bed; I'm not afraid of it burning up as I would if it were the 360. I hope you all will take this opportunity to do something positive, not only for the gaming community but for all of civilization.
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.
It also uses very little processing power,
so you can just leave it on in the background of your pc while you do other things.
Theres a table as well so we can compete against others depending on how much folding we do.
:)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have the pc version you should also do the following..............
Open the Control panel
Select the advanced tab
and move the check pointing frequency to 3 minutes like this
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee175/consoleheroes/Hero%20Stuff/Folding.jpg
That way if your pc goes off by a power cut or anything then less data is lost.

I've had a quick look at it on my PS3. I spent most of the time just flying around earth and having a look though. The music is awesome aswell.
I'm going to download it on my PC aswell.

I believe you can rip music on to the HDD of the PS3 and play that while Folding@Home is working. Just make sure you join the group and change your Donor name to whatever you want. ;)

Nope, as long as you're running it and its processing a job you're just contributing towards medical research. Thats the whole point. ;)
Did you join the Team using the Team ID?

So pretty much just use the team ID number and let it run from what I hear? I have it downloaded and figured I would let it run over night once I got to bed. Once it starts running do I have to do anything to it?

It's using your computer to process folding, misfolding of protein jobs. Then the results are sent back to the Folding@Home HQ. In other words you're allowing your computer to be a node in a computer cluster (kind of). It works kind of like a super computer, but in this case your can be doing a job and I could be doing a different one all at the same time.
Ok I downloaded now I wait? Or do i do something with it? lol sorry Im not good with this stuff
Once you download the program you should see a little icon in the bottom right it looks like a little red cog similar to Gears of War. Double click on that and it should give you the display showing Donator name, Team Number, Finished WU's (work units), what core you're using, frames completed, and ETA. There's nothing you need to do, but just do its thing. It will use the processing power of your CPU when there's free "space".
On PC machines you can get into the Folding@Home Control Panel by right clicking the red cog in the lower right hand corner and selecing "Configure". You can enter in your user name (whatever you want, but I'd use your forum name if you can) and the tream number which is: 103964. In this control panel you can also configure Folding@Home to run only when your screensaver is active if you wish. In the advanced tab you can limite the CPU usage if you wish, for laptops you can pause the work while on battery power.
Let me know if there are any more questions.
I'll have to get this set up again :) Used to do it for another site, quite fun in a nerdy kind of way :D

I'll try to get a guide sorted out later on. Using the console version of F@H is a lot more efficient than the graphical one with the screensaver but can take a bit more fiddling about so I'll see what I can do when I'm more awake :)
You can just minimize it and it works in the background without the screensaver.
;)

I will try it also sounds like a great idea. ;) I now have it running. ;)

It still uses more CPU power than the console version :p
Think it's around 15% more iirc although it's been a while so I might be slightly off on the figures.
You can tweak loads of stuff to make sure it does the best it can :)

What exactly does us running this do?
It simulates folding protiens,
and the information is then used to help understand how protiens work.
Which in turn can hopefully one day lead to cures for a variety of illnesses such as
Alzheimers disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and even many cancers.
So basically its helping to try and save peoples lives.
We dont know what could happen to any of us in the future,
maybe 1 of us will be unfortunate enough to be taken ill,
if thats the case at least we can to help them in the future by doing this now.

Thnaks flea. Once I started it, I thought I knew what it was doing, but thanks for clearing that up. It could take a while to do, though!
Every bit helps no matter how small,I just hope more of our users get behind it.

Think I should be showing up soon, just uploaded a WU.

The problem i see with this is some people will run it just until they get the award, and then stop running it.
Plus some peoples pcs are a less powerful than others,
so they could be running the program for 2-3 weeks maybe longer, and still not have a complete WU.
My thoughts are this if you appear on the leaderboard, then we add you to a list of site users that are on the team.
Surely that should be enough for doing something for a good cause, and probably 1 that best gives recognintion to the fact they are helping.
This way its easier to edit as well as if someone stops running the program we can add them below to a section called Previous Folding Members.

Meh. It's the idea that it is a good cause that would be the reason for the achievement. Who cares how long they run it, or if they run it just for an achievement? The whole idea behind F@H is that every little bit helps. It doesn't matter if my PS3 can turn over 3 WU a day or someone else's computer can only turn over 1 a day. We're all still helping.
If we're not doing an achievement for it, that's fine. But, that's my case for one.

Your processor is teh suck? Lol, each computer will work at its own pace for the most part, faster processors will work through work units faster and be able to do more. The PS3's cell processor tears up WU's, I think on average it takes 6 to 9 hours for the PS3 to complete a WU. This is why I have 6 completed already, but fear not; you're helping out. ;)

From what I understand, it generates random images of folding particles. They are then sent to whoever who then research it and find cures for some serious diseases.

Wanting to get in on the game? When I say "game" I truly do mean just that now. Foldit is a game based on the Folding@home program, allowing a human element to toy around with folding proteins. Think of it as a puzzle to solve, a game you can play on your PC or Mac while not only being fun, but also helping science at the same time. Try it out, its free after all.

It's not specifically for the PS3, its a cluster program you can run on the PC, Mac, Linux, or the PS3. Its just a program that simulates the folding of proteins, as in the ones in your body, this is a natural occurrence and scientists believe that ones that are folded wrong cause cancer, or other illnesses. What the program does is simulate these mis-folding proteins to help in scientific research. This can help better understand how cancers and other illnesses occur but also could provide help with cures later on in the future.

Console Heroes have got a certificate for all the folding that its team has done so far.
