A 33-year-old Russian gamer from the city of Ufa was killed by a member of a rival online clan after virtual violence provoked a fatal real-life scrap, Russia Today reports.

The victim, named only as Albert, was a member of the "Platanium" clan in the unreported game (possibly Lineage II). His group was mostly made up of experienced gamers over 30, and at the end of December had a bit of an online rumble with the tastefully-entitled Coo-clocks clan - mainly students in their twenties - in which one of the latter was apparently killed.

This led to an arranged meet in the real world, during which "Albert was badly beaten and died from his injuries on the way to hospital".

The 22-year-old alleged assailant has apparently shown no remorse, and refused to justify his actions. His fellow Coo-clocks, meanwhile, "continue to harass the family of the murdered man, threatening to kill his sister, who hasn't turned on the computer for days".

She said: "I think they have confused the game and reality. And after we buried him [Albert] on 31 December, they continued to threaten us."

That is disgusting.

... I don't know what else to say.

Some people just have to take it too far, can't they just argue on the internet and leave it at that? Things like this are just sickening.

Weirdos :/
I know a couple of years ago a Chinese man murdered another over the 'theft' of a sword in Legend of Mir 3. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4072704.stm
Makes no sense at all. :(

I read about that in my magazine. There are some crazy people out there. The next step up would be killing because someone "stole your kill". :omg:

Something like this is just like belonging to a gang, same principles apply in their loyalty and this is the end result. Such a shame.

Yeah. Some people take shit way too seriously.

I have a friend who is kinda like that. He's got anger issues. It got to the point that I told him I wouldn't play against him again. A match of FIFA 07 got a bit heated and that's all I needed. This friend actually got a legit death threat from a person he played with for years not too long ago. It doesn't suprise me at all that something like this happened.

It's really sad that people would go to the lengths they do (both examples) when nothing but their egos get hurt online. The annonimity of services like XBL and PSN along with MMORPGs can cause people to do/say things they normally wouldn't. It's just sick that it would keep building and building until someone actually harms another in real life. The fact that the punk-ass Russian kid isn't even saying what he did was wrong is just too much.

The thing with all of this is... People like that make the video game industry as a whole look bad. Anyone in the Columbus, Ohio area remembers the sniper shootings (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9400E3DB1731F935A25750C0A9629C8B 63) a few years ago. What was the first thing brought up when they started the investigation? Grand Theft Auto. He eventually got off with 27 years for killing a woman because he was "mentally ill" but the fact is, people instantly turned to GTA and pointed their fingers at it.

It all just makes me ill. :head_bang:
